Lewis Hine: Focusing the Lens on Child Labor
From the beginning, I was immediately drawn to the idea of children's rights. I wanted my months of research to involve a topic that influenced me. I also had my sights set on a topic that was related to education. When I came across child labor, I was fascinated, and I began seek out an individual who took a stand for children's rights. When I came across Lewis Hine, I was intrigued by his actions against child labor. I continued to research him and found his story to be quite interesting. I had never heard of him before, and no one else seemed to know who he was, so I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to expand my own and others knowledge.
My thirst for knowledge on the subject only grew stronger as I continued learning more and more about Hine. I found some books at the local library that I was able to sort through and acquire the information I needed in order to fully understand my topic. The Library of Congress houses all of Hine photographs, so I visited the website, to see all of the information they stored. To gain some information on the historical context, I used the archives and their abundant amount of information on historic events to understand the time period, as well as child labor in the past.
In order to successfully portray Lewis Hine's efforts to take a stand against child labor, I needed to display a vast amount of photographs in my project. A website allows you to display many photos in multiple different ways. A website also allows the viewer to enlarge photographs, and clarify something that may not be able to be seen at first. I have successfully constructed websites in the past, and building one around Hine would require my learning more technical skills, and also convey information about my subject matter in the most dynamic way.
Photography, although very new to society, was Lewis Hine's weapon against child labor. Lewis Hine took a stand against child labor by exposing the realities and negative effects it had on children to America. Hine was able to gain America's support against child labor and paved the road for other labor reformers. He was able to visually present to all the truths of child labor. Armed with his camera, he went against the societal norms of ignoring child labor, and stood up for what he believed, and what was true. He joined forces with the National Child Labor Committee, and together they published his photos in a number of different publicity efforts, that ultimately were able to bring justice to children, and end the charade that the child employers had been putting on for so long.
